My major interests have been transporation economics, international and regional economics. Other work that I have done in regulation and price theory has emerged from problems suggested by these areas. The motivation is curiosity about the effects of government policies on economic events in one’s own and neighbouring regions and countries, as well as a desire to understand conditions of optimality and the policies to achieve them.
I am deeply interested in economic theory as a vehicle for understanding the world. As well as a framework for prescribing optimality. While philosophically convinced of the superiority of solutions relying on free markets, I have come to realise that deeper problems consist of finding what can most effectively be freed from the control of government and other noncompetitive forms of organisation, and perfecting the capacity of individuals and institutions to make use of the market.
