(Excerpt from The Fifth Yearbook of the National Society f...)
Excerpt from The Fifth Yearbook of the National Society for the Scientific Study of Education, Vol. 1: On the Teaching of English in Elementary and High Schools Investigation of the act by which the soul, as intellect, can judge and so learn how to direct its aspiration to the attainment of its object, reveals a process so new and wonderful as to place the being who can do this thing far above any other class of beings that has appeared upon the earth. By this new pro cess the instinctive soul of the world comes into consciousness of itself. It can project itself as object, and at the same time identify this object with itself as subject. Such an act no lower order of being can perform. The product is the judgment I am myself. The name I am was given by the jews to the Supreme Being; as if they regarded the making of this judgment a symbol of supreme power. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

George Pliny Brown was born on November 10, 1836 in Lenox township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. His father was William P. Brown and his mother was Rachel (Piper) Brown.
George Brown was educated in the common schools of Lenox township and at the Grand River Institute, Austinburg, Ohio, a small preparatory school established on a sound basis in 1831. Ill health prevented him from completing a college course.
Beginning his career as an educator at the age of sixteen when George Pliny Brown taught a rural school in Cherry Valley Township, Ohio, he advanced steadily in his chosen profession. In 1854 he taught in a small academy of Geauga County, and from 1855 to 1860 he was principal of the school at Waynesville. It was in 1860 that he went to Indiana to fill the position of superintendent of schools at Richmond. There he remained until 1865 when he became the head of the New Albany, Indiana, schools.
The next year saw him back in Richmond holding his former position. He resigned after two years. Brown had been studying law during his leisure for a number of years, and thinking he would like the legal profession, he established himself as a lawyer. He practised law until 1871.
That year, his first love, the school, took him to Indianapolis. After two years as principal of the Indianapolis High School, he was promoted to the superintendence of the system. It was as superintendent of the Indianapolis public schools that Brown received recognition which placed him as an educational leader of the state. His articles and editorials in the Indiana School Journal of which he was associate editor for a time reveal his conception of the public school as an institution.
At the end of the school year in 1878 Brown accepted a position with D. Appleton & Company, publishers, intending to forsake the teaching profession.
Brown resigned as president of the Indiana State Normal School in 1886 and moved to Bloomington, Illinois. In 1888 he purchased the Illinois School Journal which was published there, changed its title to Public School Journal and later to School and Home Education, and devoted the rest of his life to it as editor.
He died at Bloomington survived by his wife, Mary Seymour Brown, whom he had married in 1855, and four sons.

(Excerpt from School and Home Education, Vol. 25: From Sep...)
Brown firmly believed and emphatically contended that "the school is a spiritual and not a material entity".
Quotations: James H. Smart, a former superintendent of public instruction in Indiana, and a contemporary of Brown, expressed a widely accepted estimate of the latter when he said, "He has proven himself to be one of the ablest educators in the West. "
Brown was tall, well formed, of remarkably fine address, ready in decision and prompt in action, a gentleman of heart and intellect whom both teachers and children respected.
George Pliny Brown was survived by his wife, Mary Seymour Brown, whom he had married in 1855, and four sons.
