He was apprenticed in his youth to a carpenter and stair-builder, and followed that trade for a number of years. About 1870 Mr. Cady took up architectural work (without any special training), and in the three decades that he was active in Providence designed the first Low's Opera House, c. 1875; Infantry Hall, c. 1882; Asbury Methodist Church, c. 1890, and the Dorrance Building, completed in 1895, also built a number of schools.
