Educated at Downside School and Trinity College, Cambridge, George Cooper was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1945. He joined the Bengal Sappers & Miners. He went on to command 19 Airportable Brigade from 1969 to 1971.
He was General Officer Commanding South West District from 1974 to 1975 and General Officer Commanding South East District from 1979 to 1981. He was Adjutant General from 1981 to 1984 when retired from the British Army. He was also appointed ADC General to the Queen in 1982 retaining that status until 1984.
He was awarded the KCB in 1979 and the GCB in 1984. He also became a Deputy Lieutenant of Essex. and also released the book "Fight, Dig and Live" about the part the Royal Engineers played in the Korean War.
In retirement Cooper became a member of the Board of Management of GEC UK.
