(Vlll PREFACE. denied, that instead of gaining ground in t...)
Vlll PREFACE. denied, that instead of gaining ground in the minds of geologists, the idea of one vast and universal Flood, with which we naturally commence our youthful studies, is becoming every day more faint; and those who were, at one time, its most ardent advocates, are now either tacitly receding from their opinions, or have openly stepped forward, and candidly read their recantation respecting it. We find, for example, a late able President of the Geological Society of London, in his opening address to that body, thus frankly expressing himself upon the subject, and alluding to a similar change of opinion which had already been expressed by one of his predecessors. Some fourteen years ago, says he, I advanced an opinion founded altogether on physical and geological considerations, that the enure earth had, at an unknown period, been covered by one general, but temporary Deluge. The opinion was not hastily formed: myrieasoning rested on tlie facts which had thenL.come before me. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

banker geologist naturalist traveler
His father, William Fairholme (mother Elizabeth) made his living from banking and was a serious art collector.
Nothing is known of George"s childhood years and there is no record of his attending any university. But he was probably tutored at home and self-taught in keeping with his family’s wealthy financial situation. In 1800 an uncle bequeathed to him the Greenknowe estate (5000 plus acres) near Gordon, Berwickshire.
Like many in his day he used his wealth to pursue his study of geology both in Britain and in Europe.
They lived in Perth; Greenknowe. Berne, Switzerland; Brussels.
Ramsgate, Kent. And many other locations in Europe.
George died on November 1846 in Royal Leamington Spa, willing homes, paintings and nearly 3000 pounds to each child.
