George received a degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Geology from Alexandria University, 1946-1950. From 1960-1961 he studied at the University of Illinois, Champaign with a Master of Science degree in Management and Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management, 1961-1963.
From 1965-1968, George worked as an Expert of Management Development, Cyprus, 1965-1968 and in Cambodia, 1974. He held a position of a Regional Adviser of Management at International Labour Organisation, Africa, 1968-1969. George Kanawati worked as a Chief of Productivity Section at Misr Beida Dyers, Egypt, 1956-1960. Also from 1969-1970, George Kanawati was a Chief of Projects at International Labour Organisation, Tunisia. From 1970-1972 he was an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Since 1972, he served as a Chief of Management Development and Career Opportunities Branch and Human Resources Development Department at International Labour Organisation.
He was a member of the Senate of the University of Ottawa.
