Parmenter received a Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts State Agricultural College (nowadays University of Massachusetts Amherst) in 1900. Three years later he was given a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degree from Brown University. Also in 1916, George earned his Doctor of Science degree from Colby College.
Parmenter began his career as an instructor of chemistry at Massachusetts State College (nowadays University of Massachusetts Amherst) in 1900. A year later he took a position of an assistant chemist at Rhode Island Experimental Station. Also George worked as an instructor of chemistry at Brown University from 1901 to 1903.
In 1903, he was appointed an associate professor of chemistry at Colby College. Then in 1904, Parmenter became a professor and head of the department at the same college. Since 1947 he was a professor emeritus at Colby College.
Parmenter was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, Phi Sigma Kappa and Sigma Xi.
On November 26, 1903 George Parmenter married Martha Elizabeth Ellis. They had a son Ellis Freeman. Then on April 2, 1942 he married Lillian Esther Evans.
