Afterwards he removed to a farm in Esopus, in Ulster County. He was one of the charter trustees of Vassar College, established in 1861, and remained on the board until 1868.
He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Dutchess Company) in 1846. He was a member of the New York State Senate (10th Doctorate) in 1852 and 1853. He was a member of the Barnburner faction of the Democratic Party, and joined the Republican Party upon its foundation.
He was again a member of the State Assembly (Ulster Company, 2nd Doctorate) in 1861 and 1862.
