Studied at Westminster School. Student Middle Temple, 1884.
Called to Bar, 1888; practised in London and on the South-Eastern Circuit. Is a member of the Sussex Sessions, North London, and Middlesex Sessions, and Central Criminal Court. Appeared in several sensational cases, notably Regina v.
Cater (threatening to shoot Her late Majesty), also in the Regent’s Park Murder Case. Appointed His (or Her) Majesty Judicial Officer and Vice-Consul of the British Central Africa Protectorate, 1896. Organised a successful j udicial system for that country.
Promoted to be His (or Her) Majesty Chief Judicial Officer, 1898. Received Central African medal and clasp, 1894-1898, as volunteer during the native wars. Appointed His (or Her) Majesty Assistant Judge for Zanzibar, 1900.
Sen. Judge for Zanzibar, 1901-1904. Also sat in Appellate Jurisdiction as President of His (or Her) Majesty Appeal Court for Eastern Africa (the Protectorate of East Africa, Uganda, and British Central Africa). Also sat as Judge in Arab matters on the highest judicial tribunal of His (or Her) Highness the Sultan of Zanzibar.
Was legal member of the East Africa Protectorate Council. Has written on Central Africa. Assistant Judge His (or Her) Majesty’s Supreme Consular Court, Sublime Ottoman Porte, since 1904.
Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Clubs: St. James’s, Wellington, Marylebone Cricket; Club de Constantinople.
Shooting and travelling, has visited Baghdad, 5, Lake Nyassa, and Lake Victoria Nyanza.
Spouse 1904, Amy (d. 1909) daughter of Major Harvey Spiller, and g.-d. of late Robert Crawsliay, J.P., of Cyfarthfa Castle, Glamorgan.
