Background
Plimpton, George Ames was born on March 18, 1927 in New York City. Son of Francis T.P. and Pauline (Ames) Plimpton.
( A classic of sport, and the first of George Plimpton's ...)
A classic of sport, and the first of George Plimpton's remarkable forays into "participatory" journalism, OUT OF MY LEAGUE chronicles with wit, charm, and grace what happens when a self-professed amateur wonders how he would fare on a baseball mound in a major league game. On an ordinary afternoon in the third-base-line seats of Yankee Stadium, Plimpton hits on what seems an inspired idea--to get on the mound and pitch a few innings to the All Stars of the American and National Leagues. What begins as a fun-filled stunt, for the "average man" to pitch in the Big Leagues, comes to a nearly humiliating end. This honest and hilarious tale features Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Whitey Ford, Ralph Houk, Richie Ashburn, and other baseball greats. What happens when America's favorite sports dilettante tries his arm against the likes of hall-of-fame baseball players recalls every young boy's forgotten dream of heroics on a baseball diamond; and for that fact alone, OUT OF MY LEAGUE remains one of George Plimpton's most beloved works.

"Plimpton will interest even the man who can't tell a pitching wedge from a putter.... This is really a book about a kind of madness with rules, and anyone can appreciate the appeal of that." -Newsweek THE BOGEY MAN remains arguably the funniest book on golf ever written. George Plimpton here joins the pro golf circuit for a month of self-imposed torture in the name of bringing professional sport to the sphere of the average man. Arnold Palmer, Dow Finsterwald, Wlater Hagan, and others populate this intriguing, classic, candid view from the first tee.

If you're into football, like entertainment stories (fact), this is a must read. I read this book back in the early 1990's & it is just the best. i still have my copy & reread it once a year. Still makes me chuckle. I am now ordering a few more copies, for my football friends. It's a cross country (in a car) interview with Bill Curry (Center for Green Bay) & George Plimpton. Includes an interlude with Sandy Kofax, among other game athletic stars. (Interesting & funny read!) This is at least one of my all time favorite books, if not my favorite!! Do not miss, if you love football.

OPEN NET is another inimitable account of an amateur's foibles meeting the world of professional sport. George Plimpton takes to the ice a goalie for the Boston Bruins, after first signing a document holding the team harmless if he should meet with injury or death as their amateur goaltender. He survives a game against the Philadelphia Flyers relaticely unscathed - and brings back this memorable portrait of the rough-and-tumble world of professional hockey.

In April 1985, Sports Illustrated published an article that stunned the sports community. George Plimpton's 13-page profile of Sidd Finch, a mysterious pitcher who had been signed by the New York Mets and reportedly threw 168 mph, came complete with photos from spring training, scouting reports, and interviews with Mets players and management. A week later, SI apologized to readers around the world for their role in what is generally regarded as the greatest hoax in the history of sports journalism. The magazine had teamed up with the legendary author and Paris Review bon vivant for an April Fool's Day prank of unprecedented proportions. After the success of the article, Plimpton decided to turn the story into a novel — a rousing baseball fairy tale that is considered one of the most memorable sports novels of the last half-century.

(Fireworks mean celebration in any language. They herald c...)
Fireworks mean celebration in any language. They herald coronations, inaugurations, royal weddings, jubilees, and glorious beginnings. There is something magical about the explosion of color and sound against a night sky, for it never fails to exhilarate anyone who is young - or young at heart. Literary lion, George Plimpton, set off his first "snake in the grass" at age ten. He has been beguiled by skyrockets, girandoles, Roman candles, pinwheels, sparklers, and maroons ever since. Fireworks, illustrated with over one hundred color and black-and-white photographs, is a lavish, entertaining, and fact-filled exultation of his lifelong fascination with man's rivals to the stars. Anyone with a predilection for pyrotechnics will enjoy George Plimpton's lively account of its history, its legendary aficionados - Louis XIV, Peter the Great, Charles V - and his engaging profiles of the families who dominate the fireworks field today, like New York's Grucci clan and Japan's Ogatsu dynasty. At a convention of "basement bombers", the industry's nickname for amateurs, we meet a marvelous assortment of enthusiasts, including a Lutheran minister dubbed the "Blaster Pastor" who punctuates her sermons with homemade fireworks. From Minnesota to Monte Carlo, George Plimpton describes every major fireworks festival. And, for those who do not know a cherry bomb from a Catherine wheel, he provides a glossary of terms. George Plimpton's eloquence and urbane wit are surpassed only by his enthusiasm; twice he has tried to launch the world's largest firework. Such exuberance is infectious. Fireworks will keep you in a holiday mood all year round. George Ames Plimpton (1927 - 2003) was an American journalist, writer, literary editor, actor, and occasional amateur sportsman. He is widely known for his sports writing and for helping to found The Paris Review.

Excerpt from History of Company K, First Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, During the Spanish-American War, Vol. 8 Does he not hold up his head and strut in his gait. - Shakespeare. This excellent drill-master, than whom none better was in the regiment nor possibly in the brigade, found his voice quite early in life and it is presumed at once instinctively cried, "Company, atten - tion." This was in the city of Hartford some forty years ago and the company then present paid strict attention, without doubt. His father, P. H. B. Saunders was a successful merchant tailor and upon his death, the business was carried on by Captain Saunders whose laudable ambition, both in civil and military matters, has ever since been to induce men to dress up. He joined Company K twenty years ago and was elected captain in 1895. First Lieutenant Edward H. Waterman. He is a soldier fit to stand by Caesar, and give direction. - Othello. Lieutenant Waterman first started for the front in the spring of 1858, following close upon the sun as it crossed the line in March. He lined up with Company K in 1879, rising from the ranks to his present position and making a model first sergeant on the way. Hartford has always been his home. ( Because Handel enjoyed such success with operas and ora...)
Because Handel enjoyed such success with operas and oratorios, he rarely composed strictly orchestral works; in fact, if it had not been for the personal requests of George I and George II, Handel would never have written the two beloved masterpieces reproduced in this volume. Early in his reign, George I induced Handel to compose the Water Music to accompany royal boating parties; for George II, many years later, Handel composed the accompaniment to the Royal Fireworks celebrating the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. Today, these two royally decreed masterworks are among the most popular Baroque instrumental works performed and recorded. Grove's Dictionary calls the Water Music "splendidly inventive and sonorous" and concludes that "the Music for the Royal Fireworks is still grander. Now, in one remarkably affordable volume, here are the full scores reprinted without alteration from the authoritative Deutsche Händelgesellschaft edition of 1886. Musicians, students, and musicologists can finally study and enjoy both scores with Handel's final arrangements and orchestration untouched by modern rescoring or editing of any kind: Water Music incorporates at least two and probably three suites from around 1717 composed in different keys (F, D, and G) for different instruments, a large woodwind (including double bassoon), three timpani, and a powerful string section. Any musician or fan of the Baroque or of Handel in particular will welcome this exciting inexpensive playing edition of two of the best-loved works of the period — today more popular than ever. Large, readable noteheads, ample margins, opaque paper and permanent binding make this a fundamental addition to every musician's library and absolutely essential for the Handel devotee.

To Dr. Woodworth, now of Cincinnati, but resident in the interior of Mexico for the past eight years, the author is much indebted, for the complete revisal and approval of his proof-sheets, as they came from the press, in all things relating to Mexican manners, customs, laws, and religious ceremonies, - thus, in these respects, enabling him to present them to the public, fully confident that nothing therein will convey the slightest impression of anything save facts, as they exist. - In giving these accounts, he acknowledges the assistance of no work whatever on Mexico or Mexicans; being entirely original, and he not willing to endorse the errors or carelessness of others.
