Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. This volume, which is the third in my work onS tructural Engineering, comprises: 1. The theory of statically determined framed structures, by analytical and graphical methods. The subject of graphical statics is presented in a comprehensive manner, showing how any problem of statics may be solved graphically as well as analytically. 2. The theory and design of masonry structures, giving the fundamental principles and the methods of their application, and the theory of earth pressure. Reinforced concrete is not treated in this volume. The next volume, which is nearly completed, will treat of the design of framed structures and of beams and girders, with the principles governing dimensioning; and it will also contain an extended chapter in which the theory and design of structures of reinforced concrete are discussed. Statically undetermined structures, such as the reinforced concrete arch, will be treated in the fifth and final volume of the series, which is about half completed. The present volume and the succeeding one contain essentially the course which the writer has been giving for many years at theM assachusetts Institute ofT echnology and at Harvard University, considerably extended and brought to date. It is hoped that they will meet the needs of practicing engineers as well as of students in technical schools. A course of four years in a technical school, in the writers opinion, does not permit of doing more than two things, or rather, of attempting to do them, namely: 1. To train the student to think and to acquaint him with the principles governing scientific investigation. 2. To show him the elementary fundamental principles of the branches of engineering. Unless he has learned these two things, the student is not qualified to pursue the higher or more complicated branches of the subject with understanding. George Fillmore Swain was born ob March 2, 1857 and was a descendant of Richard Swain, who emigrated to America in 1635, settled in Hampton, New Hampshire, and later moved to Nantucket Island, Massachussets. George's father was in the shipping and commission business, president of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, superintendent of the branch mint, and a friend of Thomas Starr King.
After the death of his father in 1872, George lived with relatives in Providence, Rhod Island, and received there his preparatory training. At the age of sixteen he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated in the class of 1877 with the degree of B. S. in civil and topographical engineering. He then spent three years in Europe. He studied at the Royal Polytechnicum in Berlin but did not receive a degree.
On his return from abroad he served as expert special agent of the Tenth Census to report on water power in connection with manufacturing along the Atlantic seaboard. His report was published in 1881 under the title Water-Power of the Southern Atlantic Water-Shed. That same year he was appointed an instructor in civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was thereafter, successively, assistant professor, 1883-86, associate professor, 1886-87, and professor and head of the department from 1887.
His appointment to a full professorship at so early an age was largely a result of the prominence he had attained as an expert witness in connection with the disastrous failure of the Bussey bridge in 1887. His work in this connection led also to his appointment as expert engineer of the railroad commission of Massachusetts, which he served for twenty-seven years, 1887-1914; and, later, to various services in connection with railroads, particularly in relation to the valuation of the New York, New Haven & Hartford and of the New York Central, and to the work of the Royal Commission on Railways and Transportation of Canada.
For twenty-four years, 1894-1918, he was a member of the Boston Transit Commission and was for five years its chairman. He was at one time a member of the Inland Waterways Commission and of the National Conservation Commission.
In 1909 he was appointed Gordon McKay Professor of Civil Engineering at Harvard University and was made emeritus in 1929. A large part of Swain's work was as a consultant on engineering projects and as an expert in engineering cases. In this work he covered a relatively wide field: transportation, valuation of public utilities, hydraulic engineering, constructional engineering. In 1917 he published How to Study and in 1922, The Young Man and Civil Engineering.
He died suddenly at his summer home at Holderness, New Hampshire, having suffered a cerebral hemorrhage three years before. His body was cremated and the ashes buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, Rhod Island.
George Swain was best known as an expert in structural engineering, and introduced into the United States some of the more important methods of analysis which had been elaborated in Germany about the middle of the last century, to the interpretation of which he made important contributions. He was the author of three volumes on strength of materials and one on hydraulics: Structural Engineering: Strength of Materials (1924); Structural Engineering: Fundamental Properties of Materials (1924); Structural Engineering: Stresses, Graphical Statics and Masonry (1927); and Conservation of Water by Storage (1915). Swain's greatest work was as a teacher. His influence on methods of teaching and on methods of interpreting technology in the practice of structural engineering was profound. Familiarity with Continental methods of approach to problems of applied science enabled him properly to evaluate them and forcefully to discourage the emphasis on methodology that they too frequently presented. In 1928 he was the first recipient of the Lamme gold medal from the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, awarded "for accomplishment in technical teaching or actual advancement of the art of technical training. "

George Swain emphasized training in interpreting the data of science as distinguished from drill in the technique of assembling it.
Swain was a member of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education.
George Swain was married three times: first, July 7, 1891, to Katharine Kendrick Wheeler, who died in 1901 and by whom he had one daughter, Barbara; second, January 23, 1904, to Mary Hayden Lord, who died in 1914 and by whom he had a daughter, Clara; third, August 21, 1914, to Mary Augusta (Batchelder) Rand.
