George Elliott Sweet was born on September 26, 1904, in Denver, Colorado, United States. He was the son of Leroy F. and Bertie Belle (Cooper) Sweet. In 1920 his family moved to Norman, Oklahoma.

Sweet attended both high school and college in Norman and was prominent academically and athletically in both. He then graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in 1927. The next year he obtained his master's degree from it and also took postgraduate studies at Harvard University in 1941.
Sweet started his career as a party chief at the Geophysical Research Corporation in Houston in 1928. Four years later he became a chairman of the board at the American Seismograph Company in Oklahoma City. He worked there till the Second World War, during which he served as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve.
Since 1945, Sweet held the position of the president of the Sweet Geophysical Company in Malibu, California, and also worked as a freelance writer.
Sweet gained prominence as the founder and president of Sweet Geophysical Company, which discovered oil in Alabama. He wrote several books describing the oil industry, including a two-volume work titled The History of Geophysical Prospecting, as well as Gentleman in Oil and The Petroleum Saga. Sweet also advocated the idea that Shakespearean sonnets and plays were written by Queen Elizabeth I. This theory is featured in his book Shakespeare: The Mystery. His other works include Beginning of the End, Murder by Guess, and Seven Dramas from Seven Centuries.
Sweet was a member of the Acacia, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Harvard-Radcliffe Club, Sigma Delta Psi, Alpha Chi Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa.
Sweet married Mildred Robison on October 13, 1932. The couple had a child, J. Eric.
