The author of the following little work, having been long an inhabitant of Washington, has occasionally em ployed a leasure hour, in giving sketches of the Metro polis and its public improvements. These have appeared from time to time in the journals published in the City of Washington, and other works of his, occasionally is sued by him from the press. Most of these descriptions he some years ago embodied in an article for the Edin burg Encyclopedia, republished in this country under the head of Washington City. Since that they have been collected and bound in a small volume, prepared by the late Wm. Elliot, called the Washington Guide, and very recently, a portion has been taken and transferred to the Monthly Magazine, of Philadelphia, edited by W. E. Bur ton, and appears there as an original article. The author feels it his duty to mention these facts, lest it might be supposed that he had borrowed his description of Wash ington, &c., from these sources, when the reverse is the fact. The information contained in this work is as minute and accurate as can be given, and will serve to make the visiter and even the reader at a distance, well acqainted with the history, topography, condition of, and every thing of interest in the National Metropolis. It will be of great use to the stranger, by directing his attention to the principal objects of curiosity to be found in Washington, and guiding him from place to place, with a knowledge of its localities.
