He was librarian of the John Carter Brown Library at Providence, Rhode Island from 1895 to 1915. Subsequently, he took charge of the collection of rare books made by Harry Elkins Widener and housed in the new Widener Memorial Library at Harvard, the largest important university library in the United States. Mr. Winship was a scholar as well as a librarian.
He edited a number of historical works and published: and His father was the American educator Albert Edward Winship.
