(Much has been written about the paintings and sculptures ...)
Much has been written about the paintings and sculptures of Michelangelo, arguably the greatest artist of the Renaissance. But what about the man? In this revealing look at the Florentine genius, acclaimed author George Bull traces the life and spiritual quest of Michelangelo, drawing a fuller portrait of the man himself. In all his work, Michelangelo impressed his contemporaries as a forceful personality, a divine genius endowed with terrabilita, or intense emotional power. Often portrayed as a solitary and austere figure, he, in fact, enjoyed a wide range of friendships. And it is those whom he loved and hated, served or resisted, who are presented here from his family and fellow artists to the popes, nobles, and rulers of Europe. George Bull presents the life of Michelangelo in the round, bringing before the reader a towering genius whose versatility and originality are constantly being rediscovered.

(Benvenuto Cellini was a celebrated Renaissance sculptor a...)
Benvenuto Cellini was a celebrated Renaissance sculptor and goldsmith - a passionate craftsman who was admired and resented by the most powerful political and artistic personalities in sixteenth-century Florence, Rome, and Paris. He was also a murderer and a braggart, a shameless adventurer who at different times experienced both papal persecution and imprisonment, and the adulation of the royal court. Inn-keepers and prostitutes, kings and cardinals, artists and soldiers rub shoulders in the pages of his notorious autobiography: a vivid portrait of the manners and morals of both the rulers of the day and of their subjects. Written with supreme powers of invective and an irrepressible sense of humor, this is an unrivaled glimpse into the palaces and prisons of the Italy of Michelangelo and the Medici.

George Anthony Bull was born on August 23, 1929, in London, United Kingdom. He is the son of George Thomas Bull and Bridget Philomena (Nugent) Bull.
In 1952 George Bull graduated from Brasenose College in Oxford with honors, earning a master’s degree.
Bull’s first contact with a publisher came in 1952, when he, unsolicited, contacted the editor of the Penguin Classics series to propose a translation of Book of the Courier by Baldassare Castiglione. The suggestion was turned down, but Bull was hired to translate Cellini’s Life, which was published in 1956. Bull also translated Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, which went on to sell more than one million copies, as well as Life of Michelangelo Buonarroti by Vasari and Pietro Della Valle’s Journeys, among others.
Bull was recruited for the staff of the Financial Times in London. In 1956 he became foreign news editor and co-wrote, with Anthony Vice, Bid For Power, his first book, which was published in 1958. Other books include Vatican Politics at the Second Vatican Council, The Director’s Guide to Pensions, The Director, His Money and His Job, and Venice: The Most Triumphant City. Although he had a successful career with book publishers, Bull also had constant employment with a string of publications. He worked in the London bureau of the McGraw-Hill World News for a year and spent almost a quarter of a century at Director magazine, where he eventually was named editor-in-chief. When he left there in 1984 Bull became a consulting editor for the Penguin Book division Business Book Library, where he stayed until 1990. He also created and edited International Minds, Insight Japan, and the Euro-Japanese Journal. Bull believed a strong relationship with Japan was important for the West and was the first director of the Anglo-Japanese Economic Institute, a post he kept from 1986 until his death. His last book, Michelangelo: A Biography, was published in 1995 and when he died, Bull was far into research for a biography of Dante.
