From 1897 to 1898 he studied at the State University of Iowa. In 1903 he graduated from the United States Military Academy and from Army War College in 1930.
In 1903 he entered the United States Army as a Second lieutenant, then advanced through the grades to colonel in September, 1935. From 1917 to 1923 he was a member of general staff corps, 1917-1923, 1925-1929, 1933-1935. From 1917 to 1920 he was an emergency officer with advanced rank. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. In April-November 1934 he was an administrative officer and acting administrator at the National Rifle Association in Washington. From 1935 to 1937 he commanded the United States Army Troops in China. On May 24, 1937 he became a Major general and chief of infantry. On April 30, 1941 he retired.

On June 16, 1906 he married Gladys Mona Chynoweth. In 1952 he married second to Mildred Pelzer. He had four children: George Edward, Gladys Mona, Bradford Chynoweth, James Henry.
