George Edward Tower, American naval officer.


Tower, George Edward was born on April 11, 1836 in Ashtabula, Ohio, United States. Son of Reuben and Clarissa W. (Sheffer) Tower.


Educated Ashtabula Academy.


Began as engineer on Lake Erie, 1856. Appointed 3d assistant engineer United States Navy, January 1862. Promoted 2d assistant engineer, October 1, 1863.

1st assistant engineer, January 1868. Commanded chief engineer, June 1887. Retired, February 1897.

Was in N. and S. Atlantic squadrons during Civil War. Principal engagements, at Yorktown and West Point, Virginia. With Admiral Farragut at Battle of Mobile Bay and bombardment of Fort Morgan, and with Admiral Porter in both attacks on Fort Fisher.

Served in Spanish-American War, May 11-December 22, 1898.


Married Phebe Wetherex, March 5, 1863 (died 1895). Married second, Jennie MacIntire, October 19, 1897.
