Admitted to bar, 1844. Practiced at Milton, 1845-1851, Poughkeepsie, 1851-1854. Removed to Brooklyn, 1854.

Judge City Court, Brooklyn, 1860-1866, 1872-1887. Appointed by governor of New York to hold Supreme Court in Brooklyn, 1881. Appointed by Governor Hill, 1890, as member of commission to revise Judiciary Article of New York State Constitution.

Retired from practice, 1906. Trustee Brooklyn Trust Company, Metropolitan Casualty Company, Greenwood Cemetery. Trustee Wesleyan University, since 1871, (president of the board 1887-1903), Methodist Episcopal Hospital.
