Walked 150 miles to Augusta, Georgia, 1838. Became clerk in grocery store there. Partner, 1842, in Hand & Williams.
Established, 1852, wholesale grocery house of George West. Williams & Company, Charleston, South Carolina. During war invested in Southern State securities when they could be bought low in the North. Bought sterling exchange, 1861, at 103 Confederate money.
Sold it in 1865 at 225 currency.
Also bought lands and cotton extensively. Established, 1874, Carolina Savings Bank.
Of which president Wrote: Letters to Young Men. Making and Saving; Sketches of Travel in the Old and New World.
Married Mission Wightman, sister of Bishop William May Wightman, of Mechanical Engineering Church, 1843 (died 1854). Married second, Mission Porter, 1856.
