Stone, George Whitefield was born on February 29, 1840 in Moravia, New York, United States. Son of Jacob Thompson and Mary (Bennett) Stone.

Career

Enlisted in Union Army, April 1861. Commissioned captain 12th New York Vols., May 1, 1861. Appointed actg. assistant p.m., United States Navy, August 1861.

Detailed as judge advocate during last 2 years of war. In merc. business till 1889. Nat. bank examiner, 1889-1895 (resigned).

Appointed treasurer American Unitarian Association, 1895. Ordained Unitarian ministry, 1898. Field secretary Unitarian Church for Pacific Coast, 1898-1907 (resigned).

Mayor of Santa Cruz, California, July 1911-July 7, 1913. Appointed by Governor Johnson member State Board of Education, August 29, 1913, reapptd. term 1917-1921. Contributing editor Santa Cruz Sentinel.
