Georges was born in Bordeaux, May 20, 1849. He was the son of Salomon de Porto and Léa Mathilde de Porto (Lunel).
His first dramatic pieces were produced when he was twenty years old, and at this period he also wrote poetry, which was favorably received. He followed in the tradition of Jean Racine and Pierre de Marivaux with his keen and penetrating analysis of the passion of love, but he turned away from the Naturalism of his contemporaries. His elegance, subtle psychology, witty dialogue, and graceful style brought him election to the Académie Française in 1923 and won for him great popularity in France and especially in Paris, if not elsewhere. Porto-Riche's most important work, L'Amoureuse (1891), which is peculiarly French in both subject and treatment, shows the conflict between an overamorous wife and a preoccupied husband. His other plays, La Chance de Françoise (1888), Le Passé (1897), Le vieil homme (1911), explore minutely all the passions of the heart. These exceptionally long plays generally present only two principal characters.
