Duby was initially educated in the field of historical geography before he moved into history. He earned an undergraduate degree at University of Lyon, Lyon in 1942 and completed his graduate thesis at the Sorbonne University under Charles-Edmond Perrin in 1952.
Early in Georges's career, Duby was an assistant in the faculty of letters at the University of Lyon beginning in 1944. After stints as professor of medieval history at the University of Franche-Comté (1950) and Aix-Marseille University (1951), he began twenty-two years at the College de France as a professor of the history of medieval societies in 1970. He also found time to lecture throughout the world and was a prolific author. Although he wrote in French, many of his works appeared in English translation. His books included "The Legend of Bouvines", "History Continues" (with Perrot), "William Marshal: The Flower of Chivalry", etc. He died of cancer on December 3, 1996 in Aix-en-Provence, France.
He was a member of Institute de France since 1974, Conseil superieur de la langue francaise since 1989, Academie francaise; British Academy, Academy Royale de Belgique, Royal Historical Society, Medieval Academy of America, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society.
Georges married Andree Combier, in 1942.
