1892-1906 professor of philosophy and psychology, Kiev University. 1907-1923 professor of philosophy and psychology, Moscow University. 1912-1923 founder-director, Moscow Institute of Psychology (later Institute of Psychology, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Academy of Pedagogical Sciences).
Was an adherent of Bundt in psychology and Stumpf in philosophy. Specialized in experimental psychology, which he interpreted as a discipline based, in the final analysis, on self-observation. 1897 wrrote textbook on logic.
1905-1906 wrote textbook on psychology for secondary schools, which ran into many educated 1946 his textbook on logic was republished.
