1919-1920 fought with partisans in the Far East. 1926-1929 headed expedition to secure Wrangcl and Geral’d Islands for the USSR. 1930-1932 headed a four-man expedition, which discovered and mapped Severnaya Zemlya archipelago.
1934 directed rescue of members of ill-fated Chelyuskin expedition. 1935 headed ice-breaker “Sadko” 1st Arctic expedition, which explored the northern Kara Sea and discovered an island. 1932-1936 deputy head.
Main Northern Seaway Board. 1936-1940 head, Main Hydrometeorological Service Board. 1940-1943 and 1945-1958 worked for various USSR Academy of Sciences institutions.
1943-1945 deputy director, Institute of Applied Geophysics, Min of Oil Ind. From 1957 pensioner; an island in the Kara Sea, a cape and a settlement on Wrangel Island, a glacier and a river on Severnaya Zemlya and a mountain in the Antarctic have been named after him.
Communist Party member from 1924.
