1885 graduate Warsaw University.
1885-1897 assistant professor, then associate professor, Warsaw University. 1897 98 professor, Kazan’ University. 1899— 1906 professor, Warsaw University.
1906-1907 lived in Geneva. From 1908 associate professor, Moscow University. 1911 resigned from Moscow University in protest against policies of Education Kasso.
From 191 I head Chair of Mineralogy and Crystallography, Moscow Higher Women's Courses. Also did experimental work at newly-opened Shanyavskiy People's University. From 1918 professor, Moscow University.
In geometrical crystallography devised a simple graphic method of processing the results of measuring crystals. This method was linked to the stereographic diffuser he invented in 1897 and which is named for him. Used least squares method for precise calculation of crystal constants.
Made his main contribution on internal structure of crystals. 1913 (at the same time as Bragg in England) devised a formula now known as the Vul’f-Bragg formula, underlying x-ray structural analysis. 1913 carried out first x-ray structural research in Russia.
During World War 1 developed a new method of preparing x-ray screens used in medical practice.
Correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1921.
