In 1949 Georgy Grechko graduated from the secondary school named after Karl May in Leningrad (now school № 5 in Vasileostrovsky District). In 1955 he graduated with distinction from the Leningrad Institute of Mechanics (Voenmeh), Mechanical engineer. He defended his graduation work at OKB-1. In 1967 Georgy Grechko defended his thesis on the landing system of the space probes "Luna-9" and "Luna-13" and took the degree of a candidate of technical sciences. On February 17, 1984 he took a degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
In 1947 Georgy Grechko participated in the work of a transpolar geological exploration crew on the Kola Peninsula. Since October 1, 1954 he had also worked as a technician (since March 28, 1955 - as an engineer) of the 3rd OKB-1 department of the Scientific Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense of USSR in the city of Kaliningrad, Moscow Region. Since February 14, 1958 Georgy Grechko had worked as an engineer, since May 15, 1959 - as a senior engineer, since April 31, 1961 - as the head of the group of the 17th OKB-1 department.
On May 27, 1968 by order of MOM №163 he was enlisted in the detachment of cosmonauts of the Central design engineering bureau of the experimental mechanical engineering (TsKBEM).
The first flight - from January 11 to February 9, 1975 he served as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-17 spacecraft and of the first main expedition (EO-1) at the long-term orbital station DOS-4 Salyut-4 together with A. Gubarev. Flight duration: 29 days 13 hours 19 minutes 45 seconds. Call sign: "Zenit-2 ".
The second flight - from December 10, 1977 to March 16, 1978 he served as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-26 spacecraft and of the first main expedition (EO-1) at the long-term orbital station DOS-5 Salyut-6 together with Y. Romanenko. During the flight he performed one spacewalk to verify the integrity of the docking station at the transition piece with the duration of 1 h 28 min. Flight duration: 96 days 10 hours 00 minutes 07 seconds. Call sign: "Taimyr-2".
The third flight - from 17 to 26 September 1985 he served as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-T-14 spacecraft (take-off) and "Soyuz-T-13" (landing) under the short-term flight program during the EO-4 relocation period at the Salyut-7 station. Flight Duration: 8 days 21 hours 13 minutes 06 seconds. Call sign: "Cheget-2" (start), "Pamir-2" (landing).
In the 1980s Georgy Grechko was a Head of the laboratory at A. M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. From April to December 2001 he was the Host of weather forecast for the week. He was the Vice-President of OTP Bank.
He was a member of Danish Astronautical Society and Association of Space Explorers.
He was married to Grechko (Ovchinikova) Ludmila Kirilovna and had 3 sons and a daughter.
