Gerald Chan attended the University of Kent, where he received a Master of Arts degree in International Relations. He also studied at Griffith University in Australia, where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chinese politics and history.
Gerald has taught international relations and Asian politics for 15 years at Victoria University of Wellington. He was an exchange scholar at Peking University in 1995. He has held visiting or short-term positions in many universities, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he also has been an external examiner to the politics and public administration program, Cambridge University, the National University of Singapore, East Asian Institute, where he was a visiting fellow in 1998, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Kobe-Gakuin University in Japan.
Chan has also held the position of an external Ph.D. examiner in the area of Chinese international relations at the University of Malaya. Before he joined Auckland in 2009, he was Professor of East Asian Politics and Director of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at Durham University. Presently, Gerald is a Professor of Politics and International Relations in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Auckland.
Gerald Chan sits on the international editorial and advisory boards of many academic journals. His key research area is Chinese international relations. He has published a number of books and many articles in this area. He wrote his first book, China and International Organizations: Participation in Non-Governmental Organizations since 1971 in 1989. His most recent book, China Engages Global Governance: A New World Order in the Making? was written in 2011.
