Lorge studied at Bear Creek High School. He graduated from Marquette University with a Juris Doctor degree in 1952.
Lorge practiced law. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1951 and then was elected in the Wisconsin State Senate in 1954 retiring in 1985 as the most senior State Senator. In 1957, he was a candidate in the Republican primary for the nomination for the United States Senate, losing to Walter J. Kohler, Junior. Lorge was the Republican nominee for Attorney General in 1974, losing to incumbent Bronson Louisiana Follette.
In 1985 he ran for circuit judge in Outagamie County, but failed to make the final ballot.
Gerald David Lorge is a member of Knights of Columbus, DAV, Wisconsin Outagamie Bar Associations and American Legion.
Gerald David Lorge married Christina C. Ziegler on April 15, 1958. They have five children - Robert G., William D., Anna Marie, Julie Agnes and Christina Marie.
