Geraldine Whelan was born on December 2, 1952 in Dublin, Ireland; the daughter of Kevin, a carpenter and jazz musician, and Georgina (Craney) Whelan, a homemaker. She immigrated to Canada In 1957.
When Geraldine Whelan was a student at Trinity College (University of Toronto), she took a variety of courses including Celtic Studies, philosophy, politics, theology, Latin, and English. Picking up a few scholarships along the way, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in 1976 and eventually completed an Master of Arts in Mediaeval Irish History in 1983. At one point she attended Osgoode Hall Law School but soon decided law wasn’t for her. That’s when she turned she hand to writing and she had been doing that ever since.
Geraldine Whelan began her career at Canadian Naval Reserve in 1973. Her military career lasted for five years, during which she served in Reserve Officers University Training Program; became sublieutenant and received Queen’s Commission in 1976.
Though she never dreamed of being a writer, she loved books and always made up stories.
Early in 1980's Whelan worked variously in Canada and Ireland as a barmaid, bank teller, secretary, waitress, dancer, sailor, editorial assistant, and goat farm worker. During this time she began a career of writer and also the editor of books, critic and script writer for commissioned television and feature film projects, including The Homebodies, The Gateway, The Celtic Princess, The High King.
She was also an occasional contributor of articles on children’s literature to CLAI (Children’s Books in Ireland).
