Professor history of health science, chairman department University California, San Francisco, 1975—1984. William H. Welch professor, director Institute History of Medicine Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, 1984—2001, chair department history science medical and technical, 1993—2001, distinguished service professor, since 2002. Served to captain United States Army, 1958-1961.
