Samarawickrama received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the University of Ceylon in 1967. Eight years later he earned his Master of Science degree from the University London.
Samarawickrama began his career as a medical officer-in-charge at Venereal Diseases Clinic in 1968. A year later he was employed at the Government Hospital in Hurikaduwa. In 1971, Gervin became a lecturer, then a senior lecturer at the University of Peradeniya. Then in 1980, he was appointed a head of the department of community medicine at Ruhuna University College (nowadays University of Ruhuna). Four years later Samarawickrama became a vice-chancellor of that university.
Samarawickrama is a member of Sri Lanka Medical Association and Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science.
On July 11, 1966 Gervin Samarawickrama married Sunethra Manthri Kehelpannala. They have a child.
