Golany, Gideon Salomon was born on January 23, 1928 in Baghdad, Iraq. Son of Jacob and Rajena Golany. He came to United States in 1967.
Gideon S. Golany got the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1956. Then, in 1962 he became Master of Arts in Urban Geography. In 1965 Golany got a Diploma in Special Education in The Hague. In 1966 he became Doctor of Philosophy in Hebrew University Jerusalem.
Gideon S. Golany was an urban designer. At first, he was a residence planner in Ictr Technion Haifa (1963-1967), then in Cornell University, Ithaca (1968). He had various appointments in Israel & abroad in the field of his specialty. Golany was a member & founder of Kibbutz Be'eri, Negev in 1946-1952. He published books, monographs, articles; was author & editor of 14 books on arid zone planning, new-town design & on subterranean dwellings. In 1970, Gideon S. Golany accepted a position at The Pennsylvania State University, where he became a distinguished professor of urban and regional planning, specializing in new town planning, underground space design, and the effects of climate upon urban design. Golany was a Visiting Professor in Ben-Gurion University in 1975-1976 and in Technion & Hebrew University Jerusalem in 1979-1980. Also he was Visiting Professor of Universities in Japan, India, Australia, etc. He became an Associate professor in Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1968-1970. Then, an Honored Professor in China Academy of Sciences in 1988 and in China Academy of Management Science in 1989. Had academical appointments in China (Tougji University, Xia'n) in 1989. Besides, he held the position of Foreign Director in China Research Society of Ancient Architecture in 1988; Was a member of Honored Educational Advisory Board in American Biographical Institute (1984).
