Hen graduated with his B.A. in History and Psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1988, and received his M.A. in History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1991. He received his Ph.D. in 1994 from the University of Cambridge.
Hen worked at the University of Haifa, Haifa, Israel, Department of History as a professor since 1994. He is currenly the Anna and Sam Lopin Professor of History (since 2001) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, where he teaches late antique and early medieval history.
Hen was a Fellow in Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in 2000-2001, and a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall (University of Cambridge) in 2007-2008. Since 2008 he is a Life Member of Clare Hall.
Hen married Rachel Shalomi. They have 3 children.
