Giken Nakano

Background

Giken Nakano was bereaved of his father in his childhood and was raised in the familyof Doei Hayashi, a scholar and relative of his mother.

Education

Scholar Doei Hayashi initiated his Confucian studies.

Career

At the age of 18, he went to Edo and stud­ied the doctrines of Chengtze and Chutze as well as taught young men. He was employed by Lord Makino of Sekiyado, Shimo-osa (Chiba Prefecture) as a Confucian in­structor of his clan. When Shogun Tsuna­yoshi Tokugawa called on Makino, Giken often lectured in his presence.

Achievements

• Toya Ando and Shundai Da­zai, noted scholars, were among his dis­ciples.
