Gilberto Amado was born on May 7, 1887 in Estância, Sergipe, Brazil. He was a son of Melchisedeck de Souza Amado and Ana de Lima Souza (Ferreira) Amado.

Educated Colégio Oliveira (Aracajú), medical. school, University da Bahia. Bachelor of Laws, University do Recife.
From 1911 to 1930 he was a professor of law at the Law School of Recife. From 1914 to 1924 he was a federal congressman representative at the State of Sergipe, and a member committee of finance and diplomacy of at the Chamber of Deputies. From 1925 to 1929 he was a Brazilian delegate to the Inter-Parliamentary in Rome, London, Paris, Berlin, and Belgium.
From 1925 to 1930 he was a federal senator. From 1931 to 1932 he was a law professor at the University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1933 he was a professor at the Institute Franco-Brazilian of High Culture and lecturer at the Law School of Paris. In 1933 he was a Brazilian delegate to 7th Pan-American Conference in Montevideo.
From 1935 to 1936 he was a law counselor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Brazil. In 1936 he was a Brazilian ambassador to Chile. In 1947 he was a Representative of Brazil in the International Labor Office in Geneva, Switzerland, 1947.

On November 9, 1911 Gilberto Amado married Alice de Barros Gibson. In 1931 they divorced. They had three children: Ana, Vera, Frederico.
