Brown studied in Providence, Rhode Island, completing an AB in Art at Brown University in 1973 and an MAE at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1977. In 1980 she received an MFA from the University of California in Los Angeles.
She has worked as a teaching assistant at the University of California in Los Angeles since 1978. She also taught art for three years at the Mountain School in Vershire, Vermont.
She obtained several grants: a travel grant from the Ford Foundation (summer 1979), an Art Council grant from UCLA (1980 and 1978) and a grant for the individual artist by the Vermont Council on the Arts (1977).
She worked as the co-editor of the monthly publication of the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies.
Brown was “interested in conceptual issues in photography." Her work includes several “photographic installations."
A member of SPE and of the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies.
