Gina attended Swarthmore College in 1975-1976. She graduated from Pomona College with a B.A. (cum laude) in 1977. Maranto also received her M.A. in fiction from The Writing Seminars at The Johns Hopkins University in 1980.
Gina worked for Alumni Magazine Consortium, Baltimore, MD, as contributing editor from 1981 to 1982. She was copy editor at PC Tech Journal, Baltimore, in 1983. From 1983 to 1987 she worked as staff writer for Discover at Time, Inc., New York City. Maranto was special contributor to Time-Life Books, Alexandria, VA, between 1987 and 1993, then she became freelance writer, since 1993.
Gina married Mark Derr on September 11, 1982.
