Gini Hartzmark was born in 1957 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States.
Gini Hartzmark attended the University of Chicago business and law schools, where she received an undergraduate degree.
A former law and business student, Gini Hartzmark worked as a textbook writer and journalist before turning her hand to mystery writing. She has written several novels centering around the character of Katherine Prescott Milholland, a lawyer/investigator who works in Chicago. The series was first published in paperback, with the third novel released in hardcover.
"Principal Defense" (1992) is a story of intrigue and murder at a pharmaceutical company undergoing a hostile takeover, and includes details about Milholland’s personal life as well as her work in solving the mystery. The reader was unable to deduce the particulars of the crime, he suggested because clues were withheld.
"Final Option" (1994) is another corporate murder mystery. When the president of Hexter Commodities is murdered, a host of individuals — including most of his family — hope to find their lives improved.
When the reader first meets Milholland in "Principal Defense", she is a somewhat unenthusiastic employee in a law firm, given to listening to rock music on headphones while she works. However, by her third appearance in "Bitter Business" (1995), she has developed a more personal attachment to her work. She even takes on a case for a dying colleague, becoming the lawyer for a family-owned business beset by infighting and a series of murders.
Hartzmark’s fourth novel featuring Kate Milholland, "Fatal Reaction", was published in 1998. In this installment, Kate must discover why Danny Wohl, the head of a pharmaceutical company’s legal department, has been violently murdered in his apartment. Two years later the author's Dead Certain appeared, in which Hartzmark offers a suspenseful account of a hospital's takeover by a crooked HMO.
