Giovanni Berchet was born in Milan, December 23, 1783.
A pioneer in the Italian romantic movement, he published its manifesto, Lettera Semiseria di Grisostomo, in 1816. He maintained that literature should be popular rather than academic and should express national ideals. Many of the Romanticists were imprisoned by the Austrians for political activity, and to avoid arrest Berchet went into exile in 1821, living in London and afterwards in Belgium. In 1847 he returned to Italy, where he was a member of the Piedmontese parliament. While in London, Berchet published poems which he called romanze, including I Profughi di Parga ("Refugees from Parga"), Il Romito del Cenisio ("The Hermit of the Mont Cenis Pass"), Il Rimorso ("Remorse"), Fantasie, and others. Uneven in merit but with passages of great poetic beauty and ardent patriotism, they became immensely popular and contributed to the movement for the liberation of Italy. Berchet died in Turin, December 23, 1851.
