In 1975, he moved to Brussels, Belgium, where he studied at the European Schools. Then he moved to the US, where he studied marketing.

On completing his studies, he returned to Europe to work in the family company. In 1997 he became joint-CEO of Ferrero together with his brother Pietro.
In April 2011, after the death of his brother in an accident, he assumed leadership of the entire corporation.
Pietro and Giovanni Ferrero, sons of Michele and Maria Franca, worked together at the top of the Group as Managing Directors for more than 10 years. In April 2011, Pietro Ferrero tragically died in South Africa while working on a humanitarian mission, inspired and driven by him, that aimed to relaunch the Ferrero Social Enterprises.
