Godfrey Poage was born on March 3, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa, United States.
From 1957 to 1967 Poage served in Rome, first as secretary and then as director of the Office for Religious Vocations, where he was in charge of directing and monitoring the church's recruitment efforts for monasteries and convents. In 1968 he was assigned briefly to serve at a monastery in Missouri, but within a few years, he returned to Chicago. Poage wrote more than twenty books during his career in the church and most had to do with recruitment for monasteries and convents. Among the books he wrote are Recruiting for Christ, Opportunities in Catholic Religious Vocations, Secrets of Successful Recruiting, and Son of the Passion.
