Seconded for service in Egyiffian Gendarmerie, 1883. Commanded Turkish Cavalry at battle of El Teb, when Egyptian force under Baker Pasha was defeated. Attached to 10th Royal Hussars, and present at second battle of El Teb (medal and clasp, Khedive’s Star, and Osmanieh 4th Class).
Left the army, 1884; studied painting in Carolus Duran’s studio, 1885. War correspondent for Graphic in South African war, 1900. With Cavalry Division at relief of Kimberley and capture of Cronje.
