Background
Gonsai Asaka was born in Koriyama, Iwashiro (Fukushima Prefecture) in 1719. Gonsai's personal name was Shigenobu and was also called Yusuke.

Education
He studied under Issai Sato and later became an instructor at the Shcheiko, the Sho-gunate College in Yedo.
Career
Like his master, Issai, he wrote commentaries on the Con- fucian Analects from the viewpoint of Chu Tze and Wang Yang-ming. Gyoson Kaiho opposed Issai’s and Gonsai’s interpretation of the Confucian Analects, touching off a controversy among the Japanese Confucians of the time.
