Gonsuke Hayashi was born in 1806.
The Aizu Clan in the latter part of Tokugawa Period adhered to the old military system and was reluctant to adopt the new system until Gonsuke came forward and gave lectures in Western method of warfare that ultimately caused the whole clan to follow suit.
When Katamori Matsudaira, lord of the Aizu Clan, was appointed Military Commissioner of Kyoto he named Gonsuke commander of Artillery (1862). In the famed battle of Toba-Fushimi that was fought between supporters of the Imperial Court and followers of the Shogunate, Gonsuke put up gallant fight leading the van for the Pro-Shogunate Forces as commander of its artillery. He was severely wounded and died in action.
