Shaposhnikov served in the Red Army since 1929. He participated in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940, the Great Patriotic War. Platoon and company commander of the Kiev Tank School (1931-1935), company and battalion commander of a tank brigade in the city of Novograd-Volynsky (1935-1937). Chief of Staff of the tank brigade in Tallinn (1940-1941). Chief of the operational department of the 10th Tank Corps, the 40th Army, commander of the 178th Tank Brigade, the 10th Tank Corps (1941-1943). He distinguished himself in the battles for the Dnieper River in September 1943. Deputy Commander, Commander of the 1st Guards Tank Corps (1944-1945). Chief of Staff of the Tank Army, Chief of the operational department of Armored and Mechanized troops, Deputy Commander of the Tank Army (1948-1954). Commander of the 2nd Guards Tank Army (1955-1960). First Deputy Commander of the North Caucasus Military District (1960-1966).
