Innes was a pupil of Christchurch Boys" High School. He played 31 games in the second-five-eights (Inside centre) position for Canterbury and seven games (including two tests) for the All Blacks on their 1932 tour of Australia. Following that tour he accepted an offer to play the professional game in England, appearing for Wigan and Castleford.
In his 1933 début for Wigan he scored a hat-trick of tries, and he appeared for an English League XIII in a match against France in 1935.
