Gordon Morgan was born on October 31, 1931, in Mayflower, Arkansas, United States. He is the son of Roosevelt and Georgia (Madlock) Morgan.
Gordon received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arkansas (former Arkansas Agricultural and Mechanical University), Pine Bluff in 1953. He also earned a Master of Arts from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1956 and a Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1963.
Gordon Morgan began his career as teacher at Pine St. School, Conway, Arkansas in 1956. Three years later he was employed as assistant professor at Arkansas Agricultural and Mechanical College, Pine Bluff, where he stayed until 1960. He then served as teacher and research assistant at Washington State University, Pullman until 1963. After that, he did research for T.E.A. Project in Kampala, Uganda for two years. He then became associate professor at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1969 Morgan became the first black professor hired by the University of Arkansas, which position he held until 1999. Morgan also was distinguished visiting professor of sociology at Washington State University in 1991.
Gordon Morgan is the author of numerous publications, which include The Edge of Campus and America without Ethnicity.
He and his wife established the Gordon D. and Izola P. Morgan Graduate Fellowship in Sociology at Washington State University and the Gordon Morgan Family Scholarship for minority students at the University of Arkansas.

1997Morgan was a member of Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists, Arkansas Sociological Association, Rotary-Downtown Fayetteville, and Omega Psi Phi.
Morgan married Izola Preston on June 15, 1957. They have four children: Marsha, Brian, Marian, and Bryce (deceased).
