Background

Born in Rikuchu (Iwate Prefecture). Original personal name: Michitaka.

Education

Studied under Gonsai Asaka and Sessai Morita in Edo and Kyoto respectively and became a brilliant poet.

Career

Took active part in the Fushimi Affair for which he was arrested. Later pardoned, he served the Ministry of Education and became one of the compilers of Kojiruien (encyclopedia of classics).

Connections

Michiyo Naka, an authority on Asian history was his son-in-law.
