(The history section describes the wars between the Sikhs ...)
The history section describes the wars between the Sikhs and the people of Kashmir and Hunza and Chitral. It describes newborn babies being chopped up, torn apart and killed along with their mothers, except for the girls who happened to be beautiful whose lives were spared for the free sexual use by the Sikh warriors. These sections are not to be read by the faint of heart. These sections involve the Maharaja of Kashmir and are of historical importance because they describe events that led up to the partition of Pakistan and India in 1947 and the wars and conflicts that have taken place since that time. Three major wars have been fought between India and Pakistan in 1947, 1965 and 1971. Conflicts are being threatened all the time between those two countries. They both have the A-Bomb and there is always the fear they will start bombing each other. This book shows that these conflicts did not start in 1947. This book was an attachment, attached to a book entitled Languages and Races of Dardistan. This shows there has been fighting and killing between these groups going back at least to the early 1800s. At the time Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner or G. W. Leitner wrote this book, India was just one country as this was before the split in 1947. Leitner was one of the first adventurers to enter the remote mountains of what is now Northern Pakistan and India and live to tell about it. He undertook adventures and collected data about the people living there, walking as much as 35 miles per day and taking notes in the evenings. He wrote several books about this which unfortunately were printed in limited editions in Lahore and few survive. The book presented here is part of the first known reprint of any of Leitner's works.

(Shina is a language spoken by as many as 400,000 people i...)
Shina is a language spoken by as many as 400,000 people in Northern Pakistan and Northern India. It is the principal language of Gilgit in Northern Pakistan. The Ethnologue of Languages of the World says it is spoken by 337,000 in Pakistan and 34,000 in India. It is a language of many names and dialects. In Chitral, it is a small minority language known as Phalura or as Ashretiwar or as Dangarikwar. In India it is spoken as a minority language in Ladakh. In Afghanistan, it is spoken in the single village of Sau where it is called Sawi. Sau is 20 kilometers south of Arandu. Most of the speakers of Shina are in Gilgit especially in Gilgit Town. Because Shina has many names and more importantly because it is spoken in a politically sensitive area crossing the border from India to Pakistan, there have been relatively limited efforts to study it. This seems to be the only book devoted to this language. The book presented here is the first known reprint on Shina of any of Leitner's works. Leitner devotes the most attention to Shina, a language spoken in Gilgit. There are more than ten known varieties of Shina, Gilgiti, Astori, Chilasi Kohistani, Drasi, Gurezi, Jalkoti, Kolai, and Palasi.

Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner was born at Budapest on October 14, 1840 to a Jewish family.
Leitner was educated at Malta Protestant college. At the age of fifteen he acted as an interpreter in the Crimean War.
He entered King's College, London, in 1858, and in 1861 was appointed professor of Arabic and Mahommedan law.
Leitner became principal of the government college at Lahore in 1864, and there originated the term " Dardistan " for a portion of the mountains on the north-west frontier, which was subsequently recognized to be a purely artificial distinction. He collected much valuable information on Graeco-Buddhist art and the origins of Indian art.
