He was awarded the Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership by Nazi Germany during World World War World War II Gottlieb Renz was the commander of the 6th Steamship Schützen Battalion (Panzer Grenadier), 6th Steamship Gebirgs Division Nord when he was awarded the Knight"s Cross on the 12 August 1944, serving in the Northern Front in Finland. Renz did not survive the war as he was killed in action during Operation Nordwind on 3 January 1945. Bibliography.
